SHELLFISHING TEMPERATURE

RESTRICTION POLICY

In response to questions regarding restrictions

(commercial regulation 16, family regulation 9) on shellfishing during lower air temperatures the following policy will be maintained by the Natural Resources Department  concerning the resource.

TEMPERATURE FLAGS

¨     A   Blue flag  will be flown from the yard arm at Saquatucket Municipal Marina when the shaded air temperature is below 30o F   (- 1 o C) at the Chatham Airport Monitor (KCQX) at 508-945-5034. This flag and temperature indicates the cut off restriction for  recreational shellfishing in intertidal areas of Harwich.

¨     A   yellow flag  will be flown from the yard arm at Saquatucket Municipal Marina when the shaded air temperature is below 25o F  (-4 o C) at the Chatham Airport Monitor (KCQX) at 508-945-5034. This flag and temperature indicates the cut off restriction for all shellfishing in Harwich.

¨     The shaded air temperature shall be read from the thermometer mounted at the rear of the Harbormasters Office, Saquatucket Marina.

¨     If the temperature on this thermometer fails to reach the specific temperatures by 12:00 o’clock (noon) on any shellfishing day then the restriction on shellfishing will remain in effect for the rest of the day.

Using a Shellfish Permit is a privilege not a civil liberty. You must obey regulations and observe temperature restrictions or risk having your permit revoked or suspended.
